With that in mind, we’ve put together the top 5 walking tracks in Hanmer Springs to help you make the most of your stay.

Conical Hill Walk

Probably the most iconic track in Hanmer Springs. This gentle hill walk leads to a sheltered viewing platform that offers a stunning 360 degree panorama over Hanmer and the Hurunui District.

Work your way up the spacious zig-zag track which is bordered by pine trees, until you reach the 550 metre high summit.

While not too steep, it is worth bearing in mind this is a hill walk, and to have sensible footwear for the gravel path.

You can find Conical Hill Walk off Conical Hill Road, roughly a 10 minute walk north from Clear Ridge Apartments. Head up Chisolm Crescent, take a left onto Conical Hill Road, and follow it all the way up.

Time: Allow around an hour for a return trip.

Majuba Walk

You can find the entrance to the Majuba Walk halfway up Conical Hill, or at the northwest end of the Woodland Walk. Perfect if it’s a lovely day, you have already reached the Conical Hill summit and you want to continue walking.

Majuba Walk links Conical Hill and the lovely Woodland Walk. The whole trail is pushchair accessible, and a family friendly activity if you have a few hours to spend. It offers some lovely views of the slopes of Mt Isobel.

The winding trail takes you through a recently planted grove of pine trees, and sticks fairly close to Hanmer Village. If you want to leave the Majuba Walk before starting the Woodland Walk,

Time: Allow around an hour for a return trip.

Woodland Walk

Part of the Hanmer Forest, the Woodland Walk is very popular with both Hanmer locals and visitors. This walk offers a lot of scenic variety, from pine forest, to parkland, woodland stream and flax wetlands.

The Woodland Walk track can be a walk all on its own, as it forms a complete loop from the Jollies Pass Road carpark. It’s mostly flat, making it great for strollers, family outings, or just an easy walk before lunch. Be sure to bring a picnic.

Even in warm weather, walking under the sheltered trees can make the temperature feel a little cooler. Bear this in mind before you head out. If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can follow the sign posts from Woodland Walk to Dog Stream Reserve.

The entrance to the Woodland Walk track is off Jollies Pass Road, about a 15 minute walk east from Clear Ridge Apartments. Just head up Jacks Pass Road to Amuri Avenue, and Jollies Pass Road runs past the Library and Memorial Hall.

Time: Allow around an hour for a return trip.

Dog Stream Reserve

This loop goes around the banks of Dog Stream and into the reserve, providing a gentle, mainly flat, easy walk through open areas and forest tracks.

Dog Stream Reserve has picnic tables and wide open spaces. Perfect for a picnic lunch or kicking a ball around. You can also take from the name that it’s a great track for dog walking, although it’s recommended to keep your dog on a lead at all times.

You can just walk the Dog Stream Reserve track on it’s own. You can find the entrances on Jollies Pass Road and around the corner of Scarborough Terrace and Cheltenham Street. Alternatively, the Dog Stream Reserve track links up with Woodland Walk. Just follow the sign posts.

Time: Allow around an hour for a return trip.

Waterfall Track

While the other four Hanmer walks are fairly easy, the Waterfall Track should be taken more seriously.

The winding and fairly steep trail follows the watershed above Dog Stream. In some areas you will find wooden stairs, but there are a few parts of this walking track that can get slippery you will need to take care. Parents, be very mindful of your children on this one. It’s probably not suitable for kids under 6 or 7 years old.

Be prepared for about a three hour round trip. A backpack with snacks and some water is probably a good idea. The scenery once you reach the top is definitely worth the trip. As well as the surrounding trees and ferns, be prepared to spend some time watching the waterfall plummeting into the basin.

You’ll find the entrance to the Waterfall Track at the end of McIntyre Road, off Jollies Pass Road, roughly a 30 minute walk from Clear Ridge Apartments.
